Latest model MG 20.7: The Finest Speaker In The World. See the range here.

On the 20.7's predecessor, the MG20.1:

For some, the passion for music can go to "extremes." However, what is extreme to one music lover seems sensible to another. To those who enjoy movies, an entire room (not to mention the cost), can be devoted to have the "theater experience" at home.

To the music lover, the MG20.1 is the best and most cost effective way to have the "concert experience" at home. The MG20.1 has wide dynamic range and deep bass response, but what separates the MG20.1 from all other assaults on "state-of-the-art" is resolving power.

Jonathan Valin, of Fi Magazine, said in December, 1998, Volume 3, Issue 12.

"So what have we got here? A big planar speaker that throws the widest, deepest, tallest, most coherent soundfield I've heard from a hi-fi system, filled with the most naturally-sized instruments I've heard from a hi-fi system, with the sweetest, most natural timbres I've heard from a hi-fi system, the finest dynamic nuance I've heard from a hi-fi system (particularly in the treble), and the most natural illusion of instrumental "action" I've heard from a hi-fi system.
What we've got here, in sum, is "realistic reproduction" in the highest sense of the phrase, in the sense I spoke of earlier, the virtual duplication of instruments and voices rather than mere analogs of certain aspects of their sound....While it's hard to call anything that costs over ten grand a bargain, I can tell you this; if it were my money, and I were shopping for the very best, these are the speakers I'd buy."

The MG20.7 has optional bi-amplification and bi-wire capability.

The Story Behind Magnepan

Magnepan has been manufacturing innovative, world class stereo speakers for years since Jim Winey, the inventor of the Magneplanar loudspeakers, first owned electrostatic loudspeakers and began the process of experimenting to design an improved electrostat. In 1969, Jim invented the Magneplanar, a thin-film magnetic equivalent to the electrostat and started the company Magnepan, a speaker based company currently manufacturing stereo and home theater system speakers.

Magnepan manufactures top quality home speaker systems, surround sound speakers, loud speakers, home theater speakers, audio speakers, best stereo speakers and home theater systems available in Australia from Mcleans Smarter Home Entertainment . Magnepan have the audio system to meet your surround sound and amplified home theater needs.

Corporate and manufacturing facilities are located in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, a small community north of the Twin Cities of St. Paul and Minneapolis. Having outgrown its original facilities, Magnepan's current plant is over 50,000 square feet in addition to corporate and engineering offices. To date, over 200,000 pairs of Magneplanar loudspeakers have found their way into the homes of music lovers the world over.

MMG: The Lowest-Priced Planar / Ribbon Speaker in the World

The Magnepan success story is built on superior performance and delighted long term customers.

Now, most consumers do their research on the internet. That's maybe how you found us. Or from one of our happy customers. This MMG,"appetizer" concept has proven more successful than any other marketing idea that Magnepan has done. A percentage of customers return to trade up from their MMG models because they love them and they want even more of the high resolution sound that they have experienced with their MMG's. So, warning is fair, you might get "hooked" too.

In your search to improve your music or home theater system have you noticed how little box speakers tend to sound rather ... well, boxy? We would like to introduce you to a new concept in speaker technology. Actually, it has been around for 40 years ... mostly sought out by dedicated audiophiles. Advertising has been primarily by "word-of-mouth" (and presently, attributable to internet reviews, social media & so on)

Live music creates large area soundwaves having characteristics that can't be duplicated by little box speakers. Soundwaves emanating from live music help us determine "is it 'live' or is it a speaker?" Reproducing large area soundwaves requires a speaker with a large surface area. The Magneplanar MMG with the equivalent surface area of 72, 1 -inch dome tweeters, and 9, 8-inch woofers does this better than speakers costing several times the MMG's modest pricing. Please note that pricing quoted is subject to change without notice.

As Dick Olsher of Stereophile magazine asserts, "The impossible problem for a conventional speaker, then, is this: how to convince you it's a grand piano when the instrument's full acoustic power is being squeezed through an 8" woofer. When I close my eyes and try to conjure up an image size, a planar speaker reproduces piano, double-bass, cello and human voice with much more spatial conviction than is possible with a conventional dynamic speaker. It's true--a planar makes a recorded piano sound more like a real piano."

(Magneplanar MG-20 Review, Side Bar in Stereophile, Page 8, February, 1995)

Magnepan is the most successful manufacturer of full-range dipole loudspeakers in the world.

Over 200,000 of these speakers have been purchased by music lovers, such as those taking part in the last speaker survey conducted by Stereophile magazine which revealed more of their readers owned Magneplanars than any other brand, and 99% were satisfied with their purchase.

Because of this success and the economy that comes from manufacturing large numbers of speakers, the Magneplanar MMG is affordable and available to everyone.

Magneplanars - High Value and Handcrafted in the USA

Other larger, higher performance models are available too.

We know you may have doubts about an entirely new way of reproducing sound.

If you are like most of us, a completely new idea will intrigue you as well as raise questions ... how can a speaker only 3/4 inch thick possibly work ... is there a downside to this approach?

After you have experienced the MMG's you may want to climb to an even higher level of performance.

MC1: BIG Magneplanar Sound in a New Smaller Package

This Multi-Channel, 2-way planar/Quasi Ribbon speaker is designed to be attached to or placed next to a wall or cabinet. Optional floor stands are available. These speakers will normally be used in conjunction with one of the Magneplanar model Woofers or a self-powered subwoofer in a serious music or home theater system ... or both.

The MC1 can be attached to a wall or cabinet and folded out of the way when not in use. It is the perfect solution for rooms which cannot accommodate floor standing models.

For serious audio/video systems... we encourage you to compare the MC1 to conventional speakers costing many times more.

The MC1's small size and low frequency response to 80Hz is made possible by attaching the speaker to a wall or to the side of a cabinet, which enhances the lower frequencies ... from 80Hz up, the MC1 is pure Magneplanar. The midbass to midrange and quasi ribbon high frequencies have the amazing speed and definition of all Magneplanars... The speakers are small, but the sound is big.

Although home theater is an obvious application for these speakers, they really show their stuff when used in a system that is demanding for both home theater and serious music listening. Generally, home theater sound has not been as demanding (in the purist sense) as dedicated music systems. Listen to music through the typical home theater system and you will hear what we mean. The MC1 works very well for both and enables your system to be ready for all levels of future technology for all types of listening... 2-channel Stereo, multi-channel surround music, and the best of home theater.
No place for a center channel speaker?

The photo below is of a demonstration in a hotel during a Consumer Electronic Show. The MC1s immediately flanking the on-wall video monitor provide a dual center channel array which can outperform a single center channel speaker.

A pair of our on-wall speakers achieves a center channel image in the same manner as a stereo system achieves a center image. By angling the speakers approximately 30 degrees to the wall, the center channel speaker on the left of the video monitor is on-axis with the viewer off to the right--- and consequently is louder than the center channel speaker on the right of the monitor (which is closer to the viewer). This "pulls" the audio image to the left and keeps the dialog centered on the screen better than point source speakers.

Finally, when the Magneplanar on-wall speaker is used with a flexible bass management system, a large, full-range Magneplanar sound in the middle can be achieved with our on-wall design. Once you have heard this concept, you won't be tempted to buy one of those sleek center channel speakers designed for flat panel video monitors.

And there is a bonus for those willing to install this unorthodox concept. In blind-fold testing, listeners found that center channel dialog and information was easier to understand with a "Maggie" dual center than with a conventional single center channel speaker. Extensive research on speech intelligibility is available on the internet.

A word of caution-- Happy customers are our best means of advertising (word-of-mouth). If you are considering MC 1s, they will sound much better if kept away from corners-- especially for front channel applications. Speakers never sound best in corners and if you need help, please feel free to call us for specific advice.

If you have the option, side-wall placement of the MC 1s will give the best performance in a shoe-box shaped room. Place the speakers on the side-wall, about 4 to 6 feet from the front wall.

Note the white floor-to-ceiling boards in the photo below. These are the Temporary Mounting Kit which is handy for moving the on-wall models around the room to locate the position for the best sound before making a permanent installation.

CC5: Center Channel Speaker

The Magneplanar CC3 employs a horizontal, curved quasi-ribbon tweeter and midrange. No dynamic woofers are employed. When used with the appropriate bass management system or bass augmentation, full-range Magneplanar performance can be achieved for the most critical part of your home theater system. In soundstage.com, John Potis writes, ..."The Magneplanar system is HDTV's sonic equivalent. What it does is highlight previously unnoticed ambient details that draw you into the experience to a whole new level"... "the level of detail I gleaned from the center-channel speaker was startling and revelatory."

Getting the most from your Maggie home theater

The system design and setup of a home theater system is more complicated than a 2-channel, music system. The level of expertise in getting the center channel done right is crucial since the center channel speaker does approximately 60% of the "heavy lifting" for movies. But, the task is often complicated by the available space, or lack of space, for the center channel speaker.

If there is any area where customers need assistance, it is help in getting the best center channel performance. Rooms and installations vary greatly which makes it impractical to give a simple set of guidelines or instructions. Call us on our 1300 995 448 number and we will be happy to discuss your specific installation requirements.

Magneplanar CCR Center Channel Reference Speaker {New model, Price to be confirmed}

Magnepan CCR

The Magneplanar CCR was designed as a companion center channel speaker for the MG 20.7 (or MG 3.7). The same or similar technology of the 20.7 was used for the CCR with a true ribbon tweeter and quasi ribbon midrange.

For many of our "Maggie" customers who are considering adding home theater to their music system, we hear that home theater is not their highest priority. If that describes you, is the CCR the best choice for you as a 3 or 20 Series owner? If you think it is not, keep in mind that the center channel speaker "makes or breaks" a home theater system. For those who want the best in home theater performance, the CCR is the logical choice.

However, we won't attempt to fool you. The CCR is no 20.7. If the state-of-the-art for sound reproduction could be had with a "small" speaker like the CCR, what is the need for the radiating area of a 3 series or 20 series?

Most all speaker companies must deal with the same issues for home theater. The space and height available for the center channel speaker is dictated by the video. For a speaker designer, it is the equivalent of "tying one arm behind their back." It is ironic that the most important speaker for home theater has major design constraints.

Magnepan's solution to this dilemma was to employ all three speakers (front left, center and right) to work together to create the illusion of a large Maggie in the center. Most ribbon and electrostatic speaker companies employ a dynamic midbass coupler to cover the range between the subwoofer and the ribbon or electrostatic driver. In our opinion, that is an unacceptable compromise for the most important speaker in the home theater system. The Magnepan solution requires more effort for the setup, but the end result is worth it.

The CCR has curved true ribbon of the same design as the 20 series or 3series. The curved quasi ribbon midrange is a similar design to the midrange of the 20.7 with 213 square inches of radiating area. Because home theater places greater demands on the center channel speaker, the CCR was designed for higher efficiency.

Experience what full-range ribbon technology can do for home theatre.

MG 12: World Class High End Audio, on a Budget. Now replaced by the .7

MG 1.6: The Best Value in the HighEnd Audio World.

Now a finished model, replaced by the 3 way MG1.7i, they were available in cherry, natural or black hardwood trim, off-white, black or grey fabric.

One of the advantages of quasi ribbon drivers is the extremely wide frequency band width. In addition to rugged power handling , the quasi ribbon driver of the MG1.6 handles over 5 octaves of the critical midrange and high frequencies (500Hz to over 24kHz). The result is low distortion and seamless ribbon clarity--a sound so clear and effortless that is has changed the thinking of thousands of audiophiles about planar speakers.

Small box speakers are very popular. We aren't designing and manufacturing large planar speakers just to be different. If we could shrink the unique sound of Magneplanars into a small box. Magneplanars would be as well-known as Bose. Despite the advances in technology, no small speaker exists that can duplicate the performance of a full-range planar speaker.

Some physicists argue that the large wave launch, low surface loudness, etc. are unique to planar speakers. The physics require the size and shape of a Magneplanar. In part, the MG1.6 offers superior sound because of its size and shape. Thousands of audiophiles see Magneplanars in a different light once they fall in love with the sound of planar speakers.

The MG1.6 offers ribbon technology and planar bass resolution at a price that some audiophiles spend for speaker cables. Musical value is what Magneplanars are all about.

And now the new Magnepan MG1.7i

Audiophile Bargain?

As reported in ‘Best Stuff' July 2010

To the average consumer, Bose maybe the best known brand of loudspeakers.

But, the audiophile has moved on to products, ideas and manufacturers unknown to most consumers. It is a world where vacuum tubes, vinyl records, large panel speakers and exotic (and very expensive) interconnect cables are common. So, it was noteworthy when the buzz began after the January 2010 Consumer Electronic Show of, what some called, the "best bargain in high-end audio". ("Bargain" and "high-end audio" are not often used in the same sentence by audiophiles.)

The Consumer Electronic Show is the grand daddy of home entertainment shows. Manufacturers from all over the world come to show their newest toys. Magnepan, a small Minnesota company, introduced the Magneplanar 1.7 pair during CES 2010 which created all the fuss. $3,000 pair may not be in the budget for some consumers, but, "best bargain" is a relative term. Subsequent reviews have all said something similar and raised our curiosity.

There is more to this Minnesota company that caught our attention than a "bargain" speaker for $3,000 pair.

Home entertainment electronics are dominated by offshore companies. Magnepan boasts that the Magneplanar 1.7 is "American-made with virtually all American-made parts". How do they do it in the bare-fisted competition of the global market?

Magnepan said their "secret" is simple-- clever engineering and frugality. With a touch of humor, Magnepan told us that the company president rides his bike to work-- even during Minnesota winters. It seems that frugality permeates Magnepan's corporate culture. Their marketing manager drives a car that has 425,000 miles-- he says, because it refuses to die. They are proud that their cost-conscious philosophy allows Magnepan to compete in a global market-- even selling speakers in China. No corporate airplane or conspicuous consumption at Magnepan which means a better deal for you.

Magnepan has been in business for over 41 years.

Yet most consumers have never heard of Magneplanars. Why, if they offer such a good value, have you never heard of them? Well, the product is just as unusual as the company. The Magneplanar 1.7 is a full-range ribbon speaker-- and it is BIG compared to a Bose. These folks at Magnepan are fanatics about the sound and they insist that the laws of physics make it difficult to reproduce an orchestra from a tiny speaker. For the illusion to work best, Magnepan says a large speaker still does a better job (No offense to small speaker manufacturers.)

MG 3.7i: Magnepan's Newest Exotic Blend of Music and Magic - in Oak or Black timber and your choice of black or white fabric.

Also available in Deluxe Cherry timber.

Since the introduction in 1983, the MG3 series of Magneplanars has earned a reputation as the most successful high-end, esoteric loudspeaker on the market. Numerous critics over the years have written of the product's advanced speaker technology combined with reliable, no-hassle performance.
Compare the MG3.7i against $20,000 dynamic speakers. In the areas of inner detail, depth, and the illusion of "you are there," the MG3.7 proves that spending more money doesn't always get better results.

Sometimes you just need a better idea.

The Magnepan '3' series of loudspeakers has had a long, successful career as a line of premier High End esoteric loudspeakers because they not only perform, but they represent 'real value'. The most popular 'High End Loudspeaker of all time' is also a real value in a field dominated by 'over the top' performers.

The most recently retired version of this family, the MG3.5R was selected by The Academy for the Advance of High End Audio as the:
"Best Value in Loudspeakers" for 1997.

Enter the MG3.7i
The MG3.7i is the recent successor to that highly acclaimed MG3.6. The MG3.7i is a 3-way system with a low mass, ribbon line-source midrange and a true ribbon tweeter. The new ribbon bass driver has 537 square inches of radiating area.

The MG3.7i boasts a larger, improved midrange than it's award wining predecessor which allows a lower crossover point between the bass and midrange, resulting in greater clarity and definition. In addition, the midbass dynamic "slam" of the MG3.7i has been improved.

The Absolute Sound's Harry Pearson awarded the MG3.6 the 1999 'Golden Ear Award' claiming roughly,
The MG 3.6, along with the MG 1.6 represent the years biggest thrill.

We know MG3.6 was terrifiec, however, the MG3.7i trumps it emphatically..the MG3.7i will prove to be a worthy successor to all the Magneplanar MG3 series, and its increased performance makes it an better value than ever before.

Stereophile's by Brian Damkroger said this about the MG3.6 in August 2000

Taken on its own, however, the Magnepan Magneplanar MG3.6/R is a sensational speaker and, at $5,000/pair, very reasonably priced. In some respects it's the best speaker I've heard period. Even in the areas where it's perhaps not the very best, it's awfully close -even when the very best is several times more expensive. Some speakers I admire, some I like ... the Magnepan MG3.6/R, I think I'll keep. Very highly recommended!
The MG3.6 has optional bi-amplification and bi-wire capability.
